A ping
There’s a new group out there (new as of ‘04, I guess?) called the WHATWG. I’m not sure if I like them or not. That is yet to be decided.
Why, you ask?
They’ve decided that there should be a new attributed added to the anchor tag called “ping”. This attribute will send notifications to websites that you have clicked on that link.
On the one hand…
The new version of Firefox (currently in development, so things may change) has this feature enabled by default. It makes it more convenient for people to track where you’ve been, even if they’re not on the same domain. I can easily see where this can be exploited.
On the other…
The new version of Firefox also lets you disable this feature in about:config. Who’s to say that other browsers will let you do this?
This is a really tough decision to make, because Firefox/Mozilla(part of WHATWG) could either be the good guy (for letting us know and disable it) or the bad guy (for promoting it in the first place). I really don’t know what to think.
