Please e-mail me so we can talk. Thanks...

Some commercial relational databases (Sybase, Oracle) allow you to associate SQL code in the database as stored procedures and triggers. Triggers "fire" on insert, update, or delete of data and can be used to enforce data integrity rules. "Newer" iterations of ANSI SQL include standard SQL syntax for specify data integrity rules (i.e., primary keys, foreign key references). Triggers can enforce non-relational-ish rules, like data formats, data ranges, or data integrity rules which are more complex than foreign key references (i.e., involving joins or aggregation).

Whether it's better to enforce the data integrity rules in the database engine or in the client software is a debatable point and depends, in part, on the application.

In my experience, people can get hung up on the solutions they know - you know the old adage, "If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail". I think we're all like that. I mean, the ideas we come up with are the end result of what we know and how we combine what we know to come up with something new and different. The trap to avoid is getting smug and assuming there's nothing else important to learn, being to arrogant to consider an idea from a co-worker, or to lazy to be curious.

If I were a manager myself, I could easily deny their request (I think). On the other hand, because the article describes me fairly well:

1) I would understand the difference between regular employees and programmer employees and be generally emotionless toward the regular employees (I'm guessing at that one, I don't know for sure, but I don't care because...)

2) I would never be in a management position and have to make that kind of decision in the first place, it's not what I want. Like it says, I *enjoy* what I do! Promotion? Insult.

Interesting article. However, if I were in a manager where I had several data entry people and other employees considered "hackers" per the article, I'd have to say it would be hard to apply policy fairly.

When a data entry person came to me stating that they also needed to do personal things so they could be more productive it would be hard to deny their request.

It made me consider that the latter "hackers" would probably be best hired as 1099 employees or on a per-job basis. I've seen this so many times in the computer industry.

The "whom" you need to do "something" for is yourself, I think. But that doesn't mean be selfish. Find a path you want to follow and do it. Sometimes we get too bogged down in self-doubt and asking too many questions, and nothing happens for too long. Life is too precious for that.

A living will is a great idea. I should do that too. After I move...

With Bush, it's "I'll do anything to help America evolve into a fascist dictatorship."

Bush's family has a history of sympathizing with nazi facists. Look to his Dad and Grand-dad. His Grandfather actually sent money to the Nazis, and, in 1991, his GW's father quoted Hitler, calling for a "New World Order."

Bush invaded Iraq, and is set to march on through to Iran. ... And like Hitler, he's using racism to justify his actions. He wants us to hate the Muslims. He's been rounding them up, and letting American troops and CIA torture them...just like the Nazis did to the Jews.
